Toilet Installation And Toilet Repairs
We need to save water every way we can. If we don't conserve, we are pouring water and money down the drain. It is estimated that each person uses an average of 124 gallons of water each and every day. You can reduce your water usage by taking just a few simple steps. So stop the leaks, slow the flow and use our water wisely.
Install A Low-Flow Toilet:
Since the mid-1990s, all new toilets have been redesigned to conserve water, using 1.6 gallons of water per flush. Older models use 3 gallons per flush. If your toilet is not a newer water-saving fixture, you should consider purchasing a new toilet!
Check Your Toilets For Leaks:
Leaks inside your toilets can waste up to 100 gallons of water each per day. Some leaks are silent, some make a running water sound and some may be visible as a small trickle of water running from the rim to the water in the bowl.
To detect silent leaks, remove toilet tank lid, remove any colored cleaning solutions from tank, flush to clear any colored water from the toilet bowl. Add dye tablet, leak detection fluid or a few drops of food color to the toilet tank. If the toilet tank is leaking, color should appear in the toilet bowl within minutes. Flush as soon as possible so that you don't stain the toilet bowl with dye or food coloring.
Some Common Toilet Problems & Solutions:
You could have a first generation 1.6 gallon flush toilet that is destined to failure. Look inside the toilet tank for a manufacture date stamped in the clay of the toilet tank or toilet tank lid. If it was made during the time period from January 1, 1994 to mid 1997, this could be the problem! No matter what you do, it may never flush right..
If The Toilet Was Made Prior to 1994:
Hard water deposits in the syphon jet hole or the angled toilet bowl rim swirl holes may be the source of your problem. You can try to clear them out using toothpicks or some harsh cleaning solution. If you use any kind of cleaning solutions, make sure you're in a well ventilated area, use eye protection & gloves and don't spill on any clothes or carpet you don't want ruined. Also if you have a septic system, you don't want any harsh chemicals entering the system. You may want to remove toilet and atempt cleaning outside. This is a messy project and it might not even work. Maybe a better solution would be installing or having a new toilet installed for you.
Strong But Partial Flush:
The toilet flapper valve may be waterlogged and dropping too fast. Observe the toilet flapper valve during the flush. It should stay up until about 80% of the water inside the toilet tank has emptied into the toilet bowl. If it drops sooner, install a new flapper and make sure there is only about 1/2" play in the chain from the flapper to the toilet handle or trip lever.
Phantom Flusher:
This could be a leak inside the tank discussed in the dye test above, it could be a problem with the lip of the flush valve, it could be the water level is set too high inside the toilet tank and overflowing thru the overflow tube in the center of the toilet tank. The water level should be about a 1/2" below the top of the overflow tube in the middle of the tank. You can try to adjust the water level, install a new flapper with a new flush valve and/or install a new fill valve.
Sluggish Flush:
The toilet could have a clog or the actual clog could be downstream from the toilet. Fill a 5 gallon bucket with water and dump it into the toilet as fast as possible with minimum splashing. If the flush is vigorous, then it is probably not a clog. If water backs up into the toilet bowl and drains slowly, its a clog.
Suction Or Gurgling Sounds In Sink Or Tub:
You flush the toilet and gurgling sounds come from your bathtub, shower and/or your bathroom sink. This may indicate that you have a clogged drain pipe or possibly something is obstructing your vent pipe. Our best suggestion at this time would be to call a professional to solve this problem.
