The back-up of sewage through the drains in your home or business is an unpleasant prospect. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to protect your property.
FIRST, AN EASY LESSON IN BASIC PLUMBING
Wastewater flows through small lines on your property to the larger, county lines in the street. From there the sewage travels by gravity or pressure to a water reclamation facility. The stream is constant, with peaks in the morning and evening. Each day millions of gallons of wastewater safely reaches the county’s facilities to be reclaimed and returned to the environment.
Unfortunately, a blockage in the sewer line can interfere with this normally qiet, out-of-sight process. A blockage in the private or county line causes a back-up through floor drains and toilets at the lowest point in your home or business. The overflow will continue until the blockage is removed or until sewage is no longer entering the line thru any branch lines such as laundry, showers, sinks or dishwasher.
IF AN OVERFLOW OCCURS:
First, Stop running water down any drains, This includes but is not limited to running the dishwasher and/or washing machine, do not flush any toilets or run any water down any sink or tub! Even if the fixture seem's to be draining, it may be comming up somewhere else in your home or business and can cause costly damage to your home or property.
Second, Call your local County, City or Sewer Utility Department!
DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOUR SEWER CLEAN-OUTS ARE?
This is the first question you will probaly hear from your County, City or Sewer Utility Department Representative when they arrive.
The cleanout is a pipe located near the property line that rises from your sewer line and is capped. Quite frequently, the cleanout becomes buried or hidden over the years and is forgotten. In some cases, older homes may never have had a clean-out installed by the plumber. It may not have been a building code when your home was built.
If the sewer clean-out is accessibble, the County or City Sewer Department Representative should be able to determine if the blockage is in your private line or in the County or City's line. If the blockage is in there line, they should be able to break the blockage, ending the back up.
If there are no clean-outs, or if the clean-outs can not be located, they will probaly tell you to call a Licensed Plumbing Contractor to assist you in locating and/or installing sewer clean-outs per current County or City Building Code.
As a property owner, you are responsible for your sewer clean-outs. If the clean-outs are buried below grade, a Licensed plumber should be able to locate and/or raise them to grade for you per current City or County Buildind Code
AND, JUST IN CASE:
Locate and keep accessible the sewer clean-outs in your yard. If you do not have any sewer clean-outs, you can have them installed by a Licensed Plumbing Contractor. Remember the sewer cleanouts are the property owner's responsibility.
Anything which should not be in a sewer line has the potential of causing a blockage. For example:
Kitchen grease, disposable diapers, and sanitary napkins can accumulate and cause a blockage.
Tree roots seeking moisture can grow through cracks in the lines, causing a blockage.
- Orangeburg sewer pipe can collapse due to age, causing a blockage
